The Dachshund is said to be very smart and stubborn, and that is definitely true!! He is clever, inventive and very affectionate to his boss. He is also extremely watchful, brave and curious. But he is also very good at getting his way by playing comedy. He has a great sense of humour, and loves being the centre of attention. But he can also be very offended and then it can take quite some time before he forgives his boss! Therefore, it is difficult to train this dog, as he will never be blindly obedient.
The Dachshund is from origin a German dog breed, which was used for hunting foxes and badgers ('Dachs' in German, therefore the name). The dogs were placed in the foxes' hole and then had to finish the job on their own. Therefore, they had to be very independent, brave and smart. These characteristics were reinforced in breeding over the centuries, as a result of which they are very independent, which is often seen as pig-headedness.
Dachshunds can reach a very old age, but their long backs are their weak spot. Therefore, they shouldn't jump (high) nor walk stairs. Also it is very important not letting them eat too much (which can be difficult because of their great appetites!), as overweight causes more back problems.
There are three sizes of Dachshunds with three different coats, making a total of 9 kind of dachsies.
The different coats are: smooth hair, long hair and wirehair. And they can have different colours: black and tan, red, brown, chocolate and dappled.
